A healthy snack day at Action Chapel Virginia (ACV), Ministry in Alexandria, VA.
We travel throughout the country promoting health and wellness and one of our priorities is the "Church." In fighting the war against overweight and obesity we have found that "The Church" is one of the vehicles for overweight and obesity. The church celebrates every thing with food that tends to be over cooked and served with no portion control. They also serve many of the culprits for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar.
Let me clarify, I am speaking from my personal and work experience in attending and teaching in " The Black Church" for over twenty years.
The foods that I have witness being cooked and served are:
Fried chicken (greasy, over battered and cooked)
Fried chicken parts: livers and gizzards in excessive gravy
Fried fish - catfish, whitings, crokers fried extra hard served with grits and butter
Fried pork chops with or without gravy
Fried potatoes with onions and cooked in old grease
Scrapple fried extra hard, pork sausages
Barbecue/Bar-B-Que spare ribs (pork) with extra sauce and over or under cooked
Pig feet, chitterlings, and other parts of the pig pickled with hot sauce and vinegar
Collard , kale, and mustard greens over cooked (mushy with chow chow, vinegar, and hot sauce)
Macaroni and cheese with 4-6 cheeses
Black eye peas with hog head and rice
Corn bread with excessive butter or a can of corn with sugar
Potato and macaroni salad with excessive mayonnaise and sugar
Sweet Potatoes with excessive thick syrup (with a cup of alcohol and marshmallow)
Bread, banana, and rice puddings, cakes, and pies loaded with butter and sauce
Home made bread rolls with extra butter and preserves/homemade jam
Extra sweeten tea or kool aid
Ha!~ Ha!~ Ha!~ I have to laugh because I have just stepped back in time into my grandmothers kitchen.

Not sure if they "promote" unhealthy eating. I think it is a lack of knowledge...for the lack of knowledge the people parish. I believe churches are concentrating on the "Spirit" man that they sometimes don't think about the "physical man". With the knowledge that you are sharing regarding health with the body of Christ we are well on our way of living right regarding both Spiritual and Physical. Thanks for giving yourself for the body of Christ!
