Health Tip Week August 30 - September 3, 2010

Heart Disease is an umbrella term for a variety of different diseases affecting the heart:
  • Coronary Heart Disease
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Ischaemic Heart Disease
  • Heart Failure
  • Hypertensive Heart Disease
  • Inflammatory heart Disease
  • Valvular Heart Disease

Most common to Us!  is Heart Attack

What is it?
Heart attack is when there is an interruption of oxygen and blood supply to part of the heart causing some heart cells to die
Warnings/Symptoms of a Heart Attack:
  • Chest discomfort
  • Dizziness, fainting
  • Pain in arm or breastbone
  • Fullness, indigestion, or choking feeling
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeats
  • Squeezing/tightness or aching in the chest
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body
  • Shortness of breath
  • Extreme weakness
  • Cold sweat
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Lightheadedness
  • Back or jaw pain
During a heart attack symptoms last 30 minutes or longer 

Causes of Heart Attack:
  • Physical exertion
  • Emotional Stress
  • Family history
"Silent" Myocarial infarction Heart Attack (can occur without any warning symptoms):
  • Common among diabetics
 How does the Doctor know if you had a heart attack:
  • Review your complete medical history
  • Give a physical examination
  • Use an eletrocardiogram (EKG) to discover any abnormalting
  • Blood test
Heart Attack Prevention:
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle:
    • Eat fruits and vegetables
    • Increase fiber and whole grains
    • Stop smoking, alcohol and drug use
    • Exercise
  • Maintain healthy numbers:
    • Cholesterol
    • Blood pressure
    • Blood sugar
