Trans Fats and Saturated Fats

Health Tip Week August 2 - 6, 2010

Fact we need dietary fats to give our body's energy, support cell growth, protect our organs and keep our body's warm in cold weather. Some are healthier than others.

What are Trans Fats?

Trans Fats are fats that are artificially created through a chemical process of  the hydrogenation of oils to maintain and enhance shelf life or palatability of foods. This process solidifies the oil and limits the body's ability to regulate cholesterol.

Foods high in Trans Fats:
  • French fries
  • Doughnuts
  • Pastries
  • Hard margarine
  • Vegetable shortening
  • Cookies
  • Crackers
Avoid manufactured foods high in trans fats because we get a lot of trans fats from natural foods (beef and dairy).

What are Saturated Fats?
Saturated fats is fat that consist of triglycerides containing only saturated fatty acid radicals. Saturated Fats is the main dietary cause of high blood and high cholesterol. Saturated fats are found mostly in foods from animals and some plants.
Foods high in Saturated Fats:
  • Lard
  • Butter
  • Fatty beef
  • Pastries
  • Cookies
  • Dairy products
  • Whole milk

The next time you go grocery shopping look at the ingredient lists to spot partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.

Tell us what Saturated Fats and Trans Fats you are addicted to? We will provide you with healthy alternatives.
