Deodorant Versus Antiperspirant

Health Tip Week October 11-15, 2010

We receive a lot of questions and this one is good. A young man ask what is the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants?

Lets start with simple definitions:

Deodorant is a substance applied to the skin to mask or suppress unpleasant body odors

Antiperspirant is an astringent applied to the skin to help reduce sweat or perspiration

Fact sweat/perspiration has no scent it only has an odor (stinks) because of the bacteria that live on or under the skin.

You have to decide do you want to control odor or perspiration?

Some products that control both odor and perspiration:
  • Secret
  • Ban
  • AXE Men's deodorant
  • Dove
  • Toms of Maine
Another question for further discussion:

Is it okay to use an aluminum based deodorant or antiperspirant?
I am old school I believe you can never go wrong with using a baking soda or starch paste or sea salt and water combination.

Let us know what you use
