Combating Body Odor

Health Tip - Week February 7-11, 2011

A malodorous body scent, having a strong offensive smell, an unpleasant odor from a perspiring or unclean person.

Types of Body Odor:
  • Skin   
  • Mouth
    • Breath
    • Teeth
    • Gums 
  • Under Arm
  • Sweaty hands
  • Genital area
  • Feet

Causes of Body Odor:
  • Dietary imbalances
  • Hormonal changes
  • Physical activity
  • Digestive problems (parasites)
  • Yeast infections
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Fungal infections
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Illness
  • Heredity
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • High levels of testosterone
  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Kidney disease
  • Tobacco (bad breath and body odor)
  • Caffeine and medication combine may cause excessive sweating
When body odor has a fish-like smell it is caused by a substance called Trimethylamine 2 (more on this topic at a later time)

How to Combat:
  • Lifestyle change
    • Daily bathing - removes bacteria
    • Change diet - limit certain foods (meat, onions, garlic, exotic spices and coffee and alcohol
    • Change clothes daily (wear more loose fitting so the body can breath)
  • Excessive underarm sweating use hydrogen peroxide or crushed radishes 
  • Chew parsley, alfalfa or other leafy greens
  • Drink a cup of sage to reduce sweat gland activity
  • Tea tree oil
  • Towelettes
  • Turnip juice
  • Wheat grass
  • Alum crystal
  • Apple cider or white vinegar
  • Baby powder or wipes
  • Baking soda
  • All natural laundry detergent

Dextofying foods may help?
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Lemons, oranges and limes
  • Garlic (small amounts)
  • Broccoli sprouts
  • Green tea
  • Mung beans
  • Raw vegetables
  • Seeds and nuts
  • Omega 3 oil based foods e.g. avocado, sardines etc.

Anyone with a body odor of any type should supplement daily with good quality lactobacillus, acidophilus and bifidobacteria to boost intestinal flora quality and seek a professional or nutritional advisor.
