Heartburn
Heartburn is a painful sensation in the chest caused by gastroesophageal reflux (back flow from the stomach irritating the esophagus)
An uncomfortable feeling of burning (sensation) and warmth occurring in the chest that can extend to the neck, throat and face. It is worsened by bending or lying down.
Heartburn Symptoms:
- A burning in the chest just below or behind the breast bone
- Coughing or wheezing
- Pain that gets worse when you are lying down
- Stress
- Fried and fatty foods
- Tomatoes and/or tomato based products
- Alcohol
Heartburn Triggers:
- Going to bed or lying down soon after eating
- Eating large meals (overeating)
- Drinking alcohol
- Smoking cigarettes
- Indulging in fatty or spicy foods
- Chocolate or mint candy
- Salt intake
- Eating certain fruits and vegetables:
- Citrus
- Tomatoes
- Onions
- Drinking soda, coffee and other carbonated or caffeinated beverages
- Wearing tight fitting clothing
- Use a wedge or blocks (foam) to raise your head off of the bed (4-6inches this will keep stomach acid in its place.
- Eat slower, chew your food slower and thoroughly
- Eat frequent smaller meals
- Omit spicy and greasy foods
- Exercise
- Maintain a stress free lifestyle
