Diabetes Check - Up

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes Mellitus (sometimes called "Sugar diabetes") is a condition that occurs when the body can't use glucose (a type of sugar) normally.

Glucose is the main source of energy for the body's cells. The levels of glucose in the blood are controlled by a hormone called insulin, which is made by the pancreas.

Insulin helps glucose enter the cells.

There are Three Common Forms of Diabetes:
  • Type 2  - The most common form of diabetes typically occurs in adults and is related to obesity. This is characterized by the body not using insulin properly and can progress until the body no longer produces insulin.
  • Type 1 -  Occurs most often in children and occurs when the body's immune system destroys the cells that make insulin.
  • Gestational   - Occurs in pregnant women when their bodies become intolerant to blood sugar.

The Effects of Diabetes on the Body
Diabetes is a disease in which high levels of blood sugar affect small blood vessels in the body.
These effected blood vessels can lead to serious complications:
  • Heart disease (attack or stroke)
  • Nerve damage
  • Kidney damage
  • Eye damage (blindness from retinopathy)
  • Skin and mouth conditions
  • Bone and joint problems
  • Stomach problems
Untreated, diabetes can lead to leg or foot amputation from gangrene.

Warning Signs of Diabetes:
  • Frequent urination
  • Unusual thirst
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Frequent infections
  • Blurred vision
  • Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands/feet
  • Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms Immediately contact your physician or visit a free health clinic in your area.
