Life Tip "The Holiday Syndrome"

The Holiday Syndrome is a time of year when depression, sadness, guilt, shame, hopelessness, suicide, and drug and alcohol use is at an all time high.

Definition

The Holiday Syndrome is the regression, development of diffuse anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, irritable and depression, occur before Thanksgiving and ends after January 1st. 


The season starts November 17th thru January 7th and is quickly approaching and several holidays are within this time period.



Thanksgiving Holiday


Recognize Your Triggers:
  • Relationships
  • Finances
  • Physical Demands
Avoid:
  • Crowds
  • Shopping
  • Stress
  • Overeating
Steps to combating these feelings:
  • Acknowledge your feelings
  • Talk to someone
  • Be realistic
  • Learn how to say No!
  • Find a support group in your area (go and listen)
  • Go out
    • Church
    • Dancing
    • Movie
    • Play
    • Dinner, lunch, breakfast
  • Exercise (walk, swim, yoga,etc.)
  • Volunteer at a local shelter or food bank
  • Write letters or cards to family or friends (alive or deceased)
  • Shop ( with limits)
  • Get a massage
    • Facial
    • Manicure
    • Pedicure
  • Give without expectation (be a blessings to someone you do not know)

Remember Do not abandon your healthy eating and living habits during this season

Christmas Holiday
        

Continue eating your fruits and vegetables, drinking your water, and getting plenty of rest/sleep.

 New Years Holiday
  Use this season to prepare for the New Year release old things and embrace something new. Let go of all unnecessary burdens (people, disappointments, fear, rejections, etc.).


Please! Please! Take extra care of your self during this season. If you feel like there is no way out, pray, call 911, a family member, a friend, a mental health hot line in your area.  

              Remember You! are not alone
