Do You Know What to Say to Your Doctor?

Health Tip - Communication Strategies When You Visit the Doctor

We all feel a little nervous, get impatient and sometimes feel scared when we visit the doctors office.

BUT! It must be done
A complete physical examination and sometimes other tests is important to maintain a healthy body.

Here are a few tips to get you through:
  • Make a list of questions and concerns;
  • Describe your symptoms (if you have any);
  • Tell your doctor what medications you are taking and/or bring them to your appointment;
  • Be HONEST! about your diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol or drug use, and sexual behaviors and history;
  • Describe any allergies to drugs, foods, pollen, or other things;
  • Talk about sensitive topics;
  • Ask QUESTIONS about any test that you may have to take and your results;
  • If you are diagnosed with an illness or disease ask questions about your condition;
  • If you are prescribed any medications ask questions about the  dose, side affects and food interactions;
  • If you can bring a family member or trusted friend.

Always! Get a second opinion
Many doctors have different ideas on how to diagnose and treat conditions or diseases.
Some are more conservative or traditional. Some are more aggressive and use the newest tests and therapies. Some use alternative therapies.

You! Have to be your best Health Advocate.
Ask for a recommendation, talk to family and friends, go the Internet or local library, research your condition, learn as much as you can, and check with your health insurance.

If you do not have health insurance go to your local health department and request a listing of Free health clinics in your area.

PAIN IS NOT NORMAL
You can receive help.
